Children’s Dentistry

As Oak Hill Dental, we emphasise on prevention and have a passion for educating our patients so that they may help themselves maintain a healthy mouth. This is also the case for children’s dentistry.

At Oak Hill Dental, we want to help form a firm dental routine into your child’s day, so they develop a love for looking after their teeth rather than avoiding it. We want your child’s first visit with us to be fun and pleasant visit for them, so this sets them up with a happy relationship with dentists for life.

Dental decay and discomfort in children is extremely common and a recent survey has shown that 1 in 4 children have some sort of dental decay. This can cause a number of problems for the child in eating, problems sleeping, pain and even speech development.

Although we can treat the tooth decay, our main goal is in education and empowering parents and children with the tools they need to prevent it from happening in the first place. Learning about dietary needs, nutrition and also the appropriate use of fluoride are all vital in prevention.

Our resident Consultant Orthodontist, Dr. Suhaym Mubeen, is at hand to answer any questions you may have regarding straightening of your child’s teeth, so enquire today!

Milk or adult teeth can change colour for a number of reasons. If you have taken a knock to the tooth, over time it can change colour. If decay or a filling is present in the tooth, it can also change colour. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch and arrange an appointment.

The teeth will usually fall out in good time as the adult teeth develops beneath or around it. They can often hang on for some time before falling out. If you are uncertain, please book an appointment and one of our friendly dentists will happily take a look and offer advice!

This can often suggest an infection might be developing. Because infections can spread quickly in children, we would strongly encourage you to have it checked as soon as possible and ring us for an emergency appointment.

As teeth develop, they often come through with spaces between them and in different positions.

Whilst this can remedy itself, early orthodontic therapy can prevent them getting worse and help to straighten them preventing prolonged treatment later.

If you have any concerns, speak to the dentist at your check up and we can arrange a free chat appointment with our resident orthodontist, Dr.Suhaym Mubeen.

We would want to see children every 6 months for a check up.

This is usually caused by frequently snacking on sugary foods. A lot of children’s snacks have hidden sugars in them. Please check the ingredients!

We would recommend replacing sugary snacks with fruit and restrict sugary snacks as a treat immediately after mealtimes.

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste will remove plaque that can cause tooth decay. Supervise your child’s brushing and brush their teeth for them at least until they are 7 years old to ensure they are brushing all of their teeth correctly.
